Divisions: Atomic Molecular and Optical Physics Div
Group Pages

The Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics Division of the European Physical Society was established to provide coordination and exchange of information within the European atomic, molecular and optical physics community.

Areas of research include:

  • Atomic and molecular physics
  • Atomic and molecular astrophysics
  • Electron collisions
  • Photon collisions
  • Atomic and molecular spectroscopy
  • Molecular reaction dynamics
  • Ultrafast dynamics
  • Coherent control
  • Strong fields
  • Attosecond physics
  • Photophysics and collisions of biomolecules
  • Clusters and nanoparticles
  • Surface reaction dynamics and self-assembly
  • Cavity QED
  • Atom interferometry and atomic clocks
  • Degenerate quantum gases
  • Cold atoms and molecules
  • Fundamental physics, precision measurements and meteorology
  • Quantum information
  • Aspects of plasma physics
The main activity of the division is to organize and co-host conferences. These range from small workshops and study groups to large international scale conferences. The major conference of the AMOPD division is the tri-annual ECAMP conference series which started in 1982.

The division integrates different subgroups:

  • EGAS - European Group for Atomic Spectroscopy, who organize an annual conference series
  • EPSEAC - European Physical Society, Electronic & Atomic Collisions Section
  • MCPG - Molecular and Chemical Physics Group - holding the major bi-annual MOLEC conference (European Conference on the Dynamics of Molecular Systems)
  • ICPEAC- Section: International Conference on Photonic, Electronic, and Atomic Collisions

The AMOPD division is managed by a board currently chaired by Iva Brezinova. In addition, national representatives are appointed to liaise with the AMOPD committee.

Should you be interested in the AMOPD activities, please contact Iva Brezinova.

  Highlights
  • The AMOP Division awards the Early Career Scientist Prize in Atomic, Molecular and Optical (AMO) Physics, in a tri-annual basis. It is awarded by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics through Commission C15 AMO Physics. The next prize will be granted in 2028 during the 16th European Conference on Atoms Molecules and Photons (ECAMP), which will take place in 2028 in Prague (Czech Republic). The Prize includes a certificate, a medal, a EURO 1,000 award and an invited presentation at ECAMP in 2028.
We strongly encourage everyone to consider a broad and diverse range of outstanding colleagues and collaborators when identifying candidates. The aim is to represent the whole international AMO physics community in terms of topic, gender, other under-represented groups, and geographical regions.

  • The call for nominations for the AMOPD Young Scientist Prize 2028 will be open in 2027.

  • ECAMP XVI will take place in 2028, in Prague, Czech Republic.

  • ECAMP XV took place from Jun 30 to July 4, 2025 in Innsbruck, Austria. See the exciting program here. The Young Scientist Prize (YSP) of the AMOPD has been awarded to Elisabeth Gruber at ECAMP XV.

  • IUPAP is calling for nominations for the IUPAP Young Scientist Prize in Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics 2023. Deadline for nominations is March 31st, 2023. Find more information here.

  • ECAMP XIV took place from June 27 to July 1, 2022, in Vilnius, Lithuania. See the exciting program here. The Young Scientist Prize (YSP) of the AMOPD has been awarded to Jordi TourĂ¡.

  • At ECAMP XIII, the Young Scientist Prize (YSP) of the AMOPD has been awarded to Philipp Haslinger, Vienna, for his "original contribution to precision atom interferometry including the first measurement of black-body radiation forces on atoms".
  • At ECAMP XIII, the newly established Lethokov medal jointly established by the AMOPD and the Quantum electronics and Optics (QEO) division of EPS in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) has been awarded to Ferenc Krausz, Max Plack Institute for Quantum Optics and Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich, for his "contribution to the development of high-field laser physics, in particular for pioneering attosecond physics, through which real-time views of electron motion in atoms, molecules, and solids have become possible".
  • The AMOPD of EPS represented by this board expresses its condemnation of the war in the Ukraine caused by the invasion by Russia in gross violation of international law. We express our solidarity with our fellow scientists and members of the EPS in the Ukraine whose professional work, personal well-being and even life is in grave danger as a result of this unprovoked aggression. In line with initiatives of EPS, the AMOPD is dedicated to do everything in its power to support Ukrainian AMO physicists and physics students in this difficult situation. We also express our solidarity with our Russian colleagues who face potential discrimination and prosecution when freely and openly expressing their critical views of this war.
