The Manifesto for Early Career Researchers: Handover event

Posted By Administration, Monday 20 February 2023
Updated: Monday 20 February 2023
ISE press release, January 10th, 2023
ISE (Initiative for Science in Europe) speaks out loud! Together with Ciência Viva, ISE launched in September 2022 a Manifesto to garner broad and robust support from key stakeholders as well as individual researchers and other supporters for early career researchers.

Indeed, it is time to act! The Covid pandemic and the general uncertainty we are experiencing is negatively impacting early career researchers, whose working conditions and job insecurity are not satisfactory. We must motivate and support the next generation to engage in research, to build and consolidate the future, enhancements, and peace of our continent, in a healthy world.

The Manifesto found a great echo in the scientific community as well as among political decision-makers and caught the attention of Commissioner Mariya Gabriel who made a point of expressing her support through an event organised by ISE together with her cabinet on January 10th and which concluded by a ceremony during which the President of ISE, Martin Andler, handed over the document to her in person.

Mariya Gabriel was accompanied by the services directors-general from the two general directorates, EAC and RTD, under her responsibility, the JRC, and members of the cabinet. This event allowed her to express her commitment to education and careers of researchers and to announce her intention to launch a pilot project. This is to test how the European Commission and Member States, academia and companies could work together to better understand the situation, coordinate funding, and support career paths in research by promoting networking between universities and businesses. The aim is to open the prospect of a new partnership with Member States, public and private stakeholders, and leverage funding to combat the risk of a decline in excellent scientific research across the European Research Area.

The Manifesto calls for:

  • Europe-wide monitoring young researchers’ situation
  • Improving research careers and working conditions in Research Performing Organisations (RPOs), Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs) and in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)
  • Enhancing research careers in the third sector, including NGOs and governmental organisations
  • Involving national funding agencies in cooperation with the European Commission.

ISE intends to make sure that these four goals receive the same attention in future policies.

The number of individual and collective signatories of the Manifesto is continuously increasing. European and national associations and organisations such as Eurodoc, Marie Curie Alumni Association, Young Academy Europe, Association of ERC Grantees, League of European Research Universities, Coimbra Group, International Consortium of Research Staff Associations, Una Europa, European Educational Research Association, the Portuguese National Association of Researchers in Science and Technology, and many others are actively supporting.

The Manifesto is the outcome of Jean-Pierre Bourguignon‘s call about Early Career researchers in the Covid crisis, and is actively supported by Manuel Heitor, former Minister of R&I in Portugal. ISE and Ciência Viva, with the support of the CNRS, co-organised the 4th Gago Conference on European Science Policy on June 13, 2022 “Europe supporting young researchers in times of uncertainty” where the Manifesto was decided.

The Manifesto is downloadable here.
Signatures are collected here.

150 years of the French Physical Society: Ready for new challenges!

Posted By Administration, Monday 20 February 2023

150 years of the French Physical Society: ready for the next century!

Author: Gina Gunaratnam

The beginning of 2023 was marked by the opening ceremony of the 150th anniversary year of the French Physical Society (SFP). The event took place on 16th January in the prestigious Grand Amphithéâtre de la Sorbonne, located in the heart of Paris.

Guy Wormser, current president of the SFP, introduced the course of the afternoon, starting with the patrons of the event: Françoise Combes, laureate of the CNRS Gold Medal in 2020, and Serge Haroche, laureate of the Nobel Prize in physics in 2012. They were followed by numerous and illustrious speakers, among whom Sylvie Retailleau (French minister of high education and research), David Elbaz (research director at the CEA, French centre for nuclear research), Caroline Collard (director of the Hubert Curien Institute) and Valérie Masson-Delmotte, palaeontologist and co-president of the GIEC (Groupement d’Information et d’Etude sur le Climat/International Panel on Climate Change). All through the afternoon, various topics such as the history of the French Physical Society, the scientific and societal challenges for the future of physics and our warming planet were addressed by historians and researchers in presentations and round-table discussions.

From these exchanges, it was revealed that the Society has always been dynamic and at the cutting edge of physics, it has gathered together members from different backgrounds like scientists, philosophers and teachers since its inception. Its history was detailed in a video and presented by Olivier Darrigol (Université Paris Cité) and Denis Gutleben (CNRS), both historians of science. Famous scientists including Jean Perrin, Hubert Curien and Irène Joliot-Curie were referenced having influenced and developed the Society through the ages.

The SFP evolved with the international spread of knowledge and now represents all the fields of physics. Professor Combes, astrophysicist and laureate of numerous international awards, underlined this relevance. In her specialised field, the diversity of physics is needed for her research: condensed matter, plasma physics, vacuum, to name but a few. As for Professor Haroche, he spoke about the importance of the SFP in the internationalisation of physics by its involvement in the main physical societies throughout the world (American Physical Society, Chinese Physical Society, European Physical Society, etc.)

The French Physical Society was also mentioned as essential to science communication. Several speakers underlined the need to address challenges such as inspiring the younger generation, in particular girls. They also emphasised encouraging and supporting young women in their work. In a context of mistrust in science and success of dystopias, societies such as the SFP should play a key role to disseminate scientific knowledge.

The discussions were followed by a panel of representatives of several physical societies, who spoke of their fruitful collaborations with the SFP. Guy Wormser closed the day by inviting the participants to share a cocktail in the Réfectoire de la Sorbonne and discover the exhibition « 15 physiciennes » showing 15 female scientists. He concluded by detailing the numerous events organised all through 2023 to celebrate physics and the 150 years.

The next rendezvous is given in person in July for the SFP congress and any time online to discover all the SFP activities.

Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory distinguished as EPS Historic Site

Posted By Administration, Friday 16 December 2022
Author: Matti Silveri

The European Physical Society has awarded Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory with an EPS Historic Site as an acknowledgment of the observatory’s long-term work. Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory is the first EPS Historic site in Finland. The President of EPS Luc Bergé revealed the award in Sodankylä on Thursday 8th December.

Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory was founded in 1913 by The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters to perform long-term geophysical observations, study changing geo- and space environments, and coordinate international space projects in Finland. When the Observatory was established, it was one of the first observatories north of the Arctic circle. The longest data set is over 100 years long (since 1914), including measurements of fluctuations in the geomagnetic field.

Today, the Observatory is an independent research organization within the University of Oulu having a wide range of national and international duties. These include ongoing geomagnetic observations and world-class space and arctic situational awareness and research capabilities. The Observatory has dedicated instruments in over twenty measurement locations from Svalbard to Antarctica.

“Observatories are a society’s long-term memory and the backbone for national contingency planning. Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory has an important role in observational space- and geoscience, in understanding the reasons for the fast changes of the Arctic polar area and in the long-term monitoring of natural hazards of the space- and geoenvironments” says the Director of the observatory, Professor Eija Tanskanen.
