Mat-Light 4.0: a project of ExcellenceS is shaping up

Posted By Administration, Thursday 15 September 2022
Author: Gina Gunaratnam

Mulhouse, 6th September 2022. Today, representatives of the French research agencies CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) and ANR (Agence Nationale de la Recherche) together with the UHA (Université de Haute-Alsace) and the coordinators of the project Mat-Light 4.0 held their kick-off meeting at the EPS headquarters. Among 35 candidates, this project is one of the 15 selected by the ANR programme called "ExcellenceS".

The project, whose name is inspired from material, light and innovation, received an envelope of more that 10 million Euros and will run over 10 years, from 2022 to 2032.

The initiators, Vincent Roucoules, Laurent Simon and Arnaud Spangenberg, aim to promote the research fields of the university. The three scientists also wished to highlight the cultural heritage of the city of Mulhouse (textile, chemistry, colorants) as well as the strong partnership between the local industry and the institutes, laboratories and faculties on the campus.

The project will be a driving force for the university to make the range of its actions more visible. The building of an innovative pole of research and education around materials and light, especially photopolymers, a domain of expertise in Mulhouse, will emerge and be followed by the hiring of staff. A common workplace will be set up in the current buildings of the Institut de Science des Matériaux de Mulhouse (IS2M), nearby the EPS headquarters.

The education and the outreach will also be developed during this long-term project. The local laboratories, teachers and students will benefit from the development of unique research tools, specialised courses and new activities around science.

The project will progress under the governance of three committees: Research, Promoting & Outreach and Training. The EPS will be involved in the second committee, bringing its help in communication campaigns and its expertise in publishing. The headquarters of our Society will also serve for the meetings of members of Mat-Light 4.0. It is a challenging project in which the EPS is happy to take part.

As Associate Members of EPS, we are always very pleased to share our latest news and updates and to connect with you through the e-EPS.

Subscribe-to-Open (S2O) – A&A and Maths

The Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A) Board of Directors and EDP Sciences are pleased to confirm that A&A will be published open access in 2022 under the terms of the Subscribe-to-Open (S2O) model. This follows the announcement in March by the Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles (SMAI) and EDP Sciences that six mathematics journals will continue to publish in open access in 2022 under S2O. In addition we have published Subscribe-to-Open (S2O) 2022 Transparency Report. The annual report details costs and prices and other metrics related to the EDP Sciences-SMAI Subscribe-to-Open program.

EPJ Web of Conferences – open access proceedings

EPJ WoC (as you may see it)  is an important member of the European Physical Journal (EPJ) series. It recently published “mm Universe @ NIKA2 - Observing the mm Universe with the NIKA2 camera” (Volume 257). Marco De Petris, Dip. Fisica – Univ. Di Roma La Sapienza, commented “I really appreciated the professionalism of all the people with whom I interacted to carry out these proceedings. The collaboration received was very effective and allowed the proceedings to be completed in a very short time.”

Acta Acustica – audio articles

For all acousticians, did you know Acta Acustica now publishes audio articles? The most recent is “Parameter identification of a physical model of brass instruments by constrained continuation” by Vincent Fréour et al. (read). To stay up to date with the latest open access acoustics research, sign up for free e-mail alerts or follow @ActaAcustica on Twitter.

Journal de Physique digital archives

We were fascinated to see the link between Mieczysław Wolfke and Louis de Broglie highlighted in last month’s e-EPS. Louis de Broglie helped to establish EDP Sciences and features in the Journal de Physique. His earliest contribution was “Rayonnement noir et quanta de lumière” in 1922! “There is undoubtedly educational value to reading ‘legacy papers’, and this holds true for articles written in any language.” Gaia Donati, Discovery through multi-lingual science archives.

Book – Einstein’s Witches’ Sabbath and the Early Solvay Councils

Also going back in time is our highlighted book, Einstein’s Witches’ Sabbath and the Early Solvay Councils which charts the seven Solvay Councils between 1911-1933. The sixth and seventh councils were chaired by Paul Langevin, another eminent physicist with strong connections to EDP Sciences. “The book focuses on the personal relations between the physicists who actively participated in the quantum revolution. These relations came under great strain during the Great War, but the Councils survived thanks to Lorentz’s and Solvay’s faith in the universality of science.” Find out more.

Looking forward in time, we can’t wait to meet many of you at the EPS Forum in June which will soon be with us. Wishing you all the best until then.

SPS Focus on Nuclear Energy Generation

Posted By Administration, Thursday 23 September 2021
Updated: Friday 24 September 2021

Author: Antoine Pochelon

The first issue of a new publication series of the Swiss Physical Society, SPS Focus, puts a focus on nuclear energy generation with fission, breeding, and fusion based technologies.

Although some countries have decided to completely stop generating electricity on the basis of nuclear energy or to phase it out in the next coming years, other nations are investing and increasing their portion of electricity produced based on nuclear technologies. This is especially true with regard to a hybrid mix of renewable and nuclear-generated energy, which is seen as the optimal approach, especially in the USA and China, in order to secure the growing demand for electrical energy from the point of view of climate protection.

In SPS Focus No 1, three renowned experts present the state of the art and progress made in new generation uranium fission plants, the useof thorium instead of uranium as fission fuel which brings along the possibility to further “burn” existing radioactive waste, and finally the roadmap of nuclear fusion concepts.

The print version has been sent to all 1200 SPS members, and to international decision makers and institutions. First positive reactions express the importance to reconsider nuclear technologies as a viable energy source; especially when considering climate protection and a net-zero emission of greenhouse gases in a low-carbon economy.

Joint Annual Meeting 2021 of the Austrian Physical Society and the Swiss Physical Society

Posted By Administration, Wednesday 22 September 2021
Updated: Friday 24 September 2021

Author: Hans Peter Beck and Maurizio Musso

The 7th joint annual meeting of the Austrian Physical Society (ÖPG [1]) and the Swiss Physical Society (SPS [2]), held at the Technology Campus of the University of Innsbruck / Austria from August 30th to September 3rd, 2021, will go down in the annals of the ÖPG and SPS as a great success. Over 600 participants attended on site an extremely successful program [3], thanks to the very constructive interaction of all board members of the SPS and the ÖPG in preparation and final design of the joint conference, both with regard to the plenary session and the topical sessions, and also with regard to the entire award ceremony for prizes awarded by ÖPG and SPS, the ceremony including the binational Charpak-Ritz Prize, jointly awarded by SPS and the French Physical Society SFP [4].

This year lectures in the plenary session spanned a wide range of physical and physics-related aspects [3], i.e. from surfaces at the atomic scale to materials, from quantum states to quantum optics and quantum technologies, from particle colliders to free electron lasers, from exoplanets to black holes, from physics and education to physics and society, in particular also in connection with innovative products by start-ups, with renewable energy and its repercussion on the climate, and with quality of life in connection with medical applications of physics-related technology.

Stimulated by the talks given in the plenary session and in the topical sessions, and by the personal exchange during the poster sessions, where some are accessible online [3], it was indeed possible to show what the advantages of a personal exchange are, being again achievable with the Covid certificate being checked at the registration desk, and where it became self-evident that physicists are predominately fully vaccinated.  When new contacts are made, when informal conversations spontaneously arise and where one can build up mutual trust, the glue is formed to do further and better research, allowing trying out new ideas in physics, which are the base for the proposition and realization of new projects. It is this inspiring vibe that motivates young members to stay long-term members of the two societies and thus allows to actively shape the future activities of the two societies, which get then also constructively reflected by the associated activities of the EPS.

Winners of the prizes of the Austrian and of the Swiss Physical Society, and the winner of the binational Charpak-Ritz Prize of the Swiss and of the French Physical Society, together with the presidents of the French, Swiss and Austrian Physical Societies. The prizes have been bestowed during the 7th joint annual meeting of the Austrian and Swiss Physical Society in Innsbruck/Austria from 30th August to 3rd September 2021.

EPS Survey on Open Science & Career Development for Researchers 2018

Posted By Administration, Thursday 8 November 2018

The survey was addressed to physicists in Europe, asking as many as possible to express their views on 'Open Science and Career Development'. It was formulated by the European Physical Society (EPS) in collaboration with the European Council of Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers (Eurodoc). It was launched in December 2017 and ran essentially during the first quarter of 2018. Information of the survey went through the usual channels of EPS to its Divisions, Groups and Individual Members, hoping also for the support of its member national societies.

The purpose of this survey is to help define European policy on open science and to improve the career development of researchers. In particular it was to help EPS to provide specific advice and solutions related to needs and expectations of the European community of physicists.

Open science aims to make scientific data and research accessible to all levels of an inquiring society and includes practices such as:

  • open data = open sharing of research data
  • open source = open sharing of research software/code
  • open notebook = open sharing of research notebooks
  • open access = open publishing of research results in journals/textbooks and/or depositing them in repositories/archives
  • open peer review = open sharing of research peer reviews
  • open education = open sharing of education and resources
  • citizen science = involving the general public in scientific research.

The expectation for a large number of respondents was unfortunately not reached. In total 329 persons responded to the survey. If this number is not really enough to achieve a statistical significance the results can nevertheless be used as a trend on the actual information level of the community of physicists.
