Call for EPS Prizes and Distinctions 2016 - deadline 31 January

EPS Fellows

EPS Members are invited to nominate EPS Individual Members as EPS Fellows. Individuals whose achievements in physics, whether in research, industry or education and/or through commitment to the EPS warrant specific recognition are eligible to become EPS Fellows. Nominations should be sent to EPS Secretary General, David Lee, by 31 January 2016.

More information about EPS Fellows, including the list of current EPS Fellows and the rules for nomination, is available on the EPS website.

EPS Honorary Members

EPS Members are invited to nominate outstanding individuals as Honorary Members of the EPS.
Distinguished persons whose outstanding achievements in physics or a related science whom the European Physical Society especially desires to honour can be elected EPS Honorary Members. In addition, distinguished individuals whom the EPS may desire to honour for exceptional service to the Society in furtherance of its aims and objectives shall also be eligible to become Honorary Members.

Nominations should be made no later than 31 January 2016 to EPS Secretary General, David Lee.

Gero Thomas medal

The Gero Thomas Commemorative Medal was created in 2000 to honour the memory of G. Thomas, who was the Secretary General of the EPS from 1973 to 1997 and played an essential role in the growth and the development of the Society. The Commemorative Medal is awarded to individuals for their outstanding service to the Society.  More information about the award, and a list of recipients can be found here: http://www.eps.org/?page=distinction_prize_gt 

EPS Members (Member Societies, Individual Members, and Associate members) are invited to make nominations for the 2016 Gero Thomas Commemorative Medal. 

The deadline is 31 January 2016.  

Please note that The Medal may not be awarded to any person currently member or having been member of the Executive Committee in the past three years.  To complete the nomination, the nominator is asked to provide the following documents:
(i) The references of the nominee (Name, first name, full postal address, email address, phone and fax numbers)

(ii) A description of the services of the individual to the Society (maximum & A4 page)
(iii) A suggested citation (maximum 250 words)
(iv) Nominee’s academic and professional background, and professional honors
(v) Three supporters statements  All proposals will be treated in confidence. Although they will be acknowledged there will be no further communication.

Call for nominations for the EPS CMD Europhysics Prize 2016

The EPS Condensed Matter Division Europhysics Prize for Outstanding Achievements in Condensed Matter Physics has been presented annually since 1975 by the European Physical Society, and has become one of the most prestigious awards for condensed matter physics in Europe.

The selection committee is pleased to request nominations for the 2016 EPS Condensed Matter Division Europhysics Prize. The prize laureates will receive a cash award, as well as an invitation to attend and present their work at the 26th Condensed Matter General Conference (CMD 26) that will take place in Groningen, the Netherlands, from September 5th through September 9th, 2016. 

The EPS Europhysics Prize is awarded in recognition of recent work by one or more individuals in the area of condensed matter physics, and, more specifically, work leading to advances in the fields of electronic, electrical, and materials engineering that, in the opinion of the Society's selection committee, is of particular scientific excellence and merit. Recent work is defined as work that has been completed within the 5 years prior to the award. The prize may be awarded for either pure or applied research, at the discretion of the Society.

Only complete nominations will be considered. For a nomination to be complete, it must include:

  • a complete CV
  • a publication list (5 pages maximum)
  • an indication of the three most relevant papers to the nomination
  • a description of the work justifying the nomination (2 pages maximum)
  • a suggested short citation

Nomination may be made online by using the nomination form that can be found here.

The deadline for the receipt of nominations is
 January 31st, 2016.

Call for bids for the organisation of the EPS-HEP 2019 Conference

The HEPP Board of the European Physical Society is soliciting Expressions of Interest (EoI) from potential hosts of the EPS-HEP conference in 2019. These EoIs should contain some preliminary information on the Local Organizing Committee, the Universities and/or Laboratories involved, the location of the conference, the foreseen costs, the expected financial contributions from sources other than conference fees.

The EoIs should be sent to the Chair of the EPS-HEPP Board (yves.sirois@in2p3.fr) by the 30th of June 2016. The EPS-HEPP Board will form a short list of two or three candidate sites and will invite their representatives to present their formal bids at an EPS-HEPP Board meeting which will be held at CERN in October 2016.

The selection of the site for 2019 should normally be decided at the same meeting.

Call for the EPS QEOD Research in Laser Science and Applications Prize 2016

Overview

The Quantum Electronics and Optics Division [QEOD] of the European Physical Society is presently soliciting nominations for their biennial prize in ‘Research in Laser Science and Applications’ to be presented at the 2016 Europhoton Conference on Solid-State, Fibre and Waveguide Coherent Light Sources.  Details of the application procedure and information required are given below.

Nominations are to be received online by April 15th, 2016 at the latest.

The European Physical Society (EPS) Prize for Research in Laser Science and Applications is a major prize awarded on behalf of the European Physical Society through its Quantum Electronics Optics Division (QEOD). The prize is awarded every 2 years in recognition of recent work by one or more individuals (no more than three) for scientific excellence in the area of laser science and applications in its broadest sense.

The work for which the individual(s) is (are) nominated must be such that a significant component of it was performed during the period 5 years prior to the award. In addition, the award will recognise research for which a significant portion of the work was carried out in Europe or in cooperation with European researchers, and may be given for either pure or applied research.

The award is accompanied by an engraved glass medal, a certificate, and a monetary sum of 2000 euros.

The Prize Ceremony and Lecture will be highlights of the EPS Europhoton Conference in Vienna, Austria between the 21st and 26th August 2016.

Nominations must include:

  • A cover letter provided by the nominator with proposed citation
  • A two-page summary of the significance of the work which is the subject of the nomination. For a nominated team of more than one person, the summary should clearly specify the individual contribution of each nominee, and when and where the work has been performed.
  • Nominee CV(s)
  • A list of publications covering the last five years (a few earlier articles particularly relevant for the nomination can also be included).  Five articles of most significance should be highlighted.* Up to three letters of endorsement of the nomination.

Proposal to increase Individual Membership fees

Background

The Executive Committee has decided to propose to the EPS Council Meeting on 1-2 April 2016 to increase the membership fees for EPS Individual Members.

Any increase decided by Council 2016 will not take effect until 2017.

The proposal would increase EPS Individual Membership fees as follows:

  • Individual Member Category 3a Euro 25 would be increased to Euro 27.50
  • Individual Member Category 3b Euro 50 would be increased to Euro 55
  • Individual Member Category 3c Euro 70 would be increased to Euro 80
  • Individual Member Category 3d Euro 18 would be increased to Euro 20
  • Individual Member Category 3e Euro 18 would be increased to Euro 20

 

Amendment

According to §5 of Annexe 1 to the Constitution and By-laws, the Unit Fee for the Calculation Individual Membership fees is fixed at Euro 10.

The Executive Committee proposes to modify section 6 of Annexe 1 to the Constitution and By-laws as follows:

“§6 Membership fee of Individual Members

The membership fee for members according to Art.3 a) … e) is calculated as the average unit fee multiplied by the number of units given in TABLE 3:

Effect

The amendment would be applicable for Individual Membership fees invoiced for the year beginning 1 January 2017.
No other provision of the Constitution is hereby modified.

Call for nominations to the 2016 APS-EPS Landau-Spitzer award

The Landau-Spitzer Award on the Physics of Plasmas

The Landau-Spitzer Award on the Physics of Plasmas for “Outstanding contributions to plasma physics” is jointly sponsored by the Plasma Physics Divisions of the American Physical Society and the European Physical Society.

The Award is given to an individual or group of researchers for outstanding theoretical, experimental or technical contribution(s) in plasma physics and for advancing the collaboration and unity between Europe and the USA by joint research or research that advances knowledge which benefits the two communities in a unique way. The award may be given to a team or collaboration of up to four persons affiliated with either the European or US institutions.

The call for nominations for the 2016 award is open. The deadline is January 31, 2016. A complete nomination package, including:

  • a nomination letter evaluating the nominee’s qualifications in the light of the particular features of the prize or award and identifying the specific work to be recognized,
  • a biographical sketch (optional),
  • a list of the most important publications,
  • at least two, but no more than four, seconding letters and,
  • up to five reprints or preprints if appropriate.

shall be submitted to honors@aps.org with the subject line “Landau-Spitzer Award Nomination”.

The 2016 Selection Committee Members are: Richard Dendy (Chair), David Meyerhofer (Vice Chair), Stefano Atzeni (EPS), Alain Brizard (APS), James Hanson (APS) and Christophe Hollenstein (EPS).

Self-nominations are not accepted. Members of the APS Division of Plasma Physics Executive Committee or members of the EPS Plasma Physics Division Board are not eligible.
