The EPS Emmy Noether Distinction for Women in Physics 2016 (Automn/Winter) was given to Dr. Patricia Bassereau, for "her important and innovative work on the studies of soft matter and in vitro biological systems at the forefront of the Physics-Biology science. Her rich and fruitful career is an inspiration for young women researchers.”

The Quantum Electronics and Optics Division (QEOD) of the European Physical Society (EPS) is soliciting nominations for the biennial Quantum Electronics and Optics Prizes, Fresnel Prizes and Thesis Prizes, which will be presented at the 2017 Edition of the CLEO/Europe-EQEC Conference in Munich, Germany, between Sunday 25 June and Thursday 29 June 2017.
Nominations are to be received on line by March 24th, 2017 at the latest.
EPS Quantum Electronics & Optics Prizes
Two Quantum Electronics & Optics prizes are awarded for outstanding contributions to quantum electronics and optics. There is one prize for fundamental aspects and another one for applied aspects. Each Prize winner will receive a medal and 5000 Euro.
Fresnel Prizes 2017
Two EPS-QEOD prizes will be awarded for outstanding contributions to quantum electronics and optics made by young scientists before the age of 35 (as of December 31st, 2017). There is one prize for fundamental aspects and one prize for applied aspects. The prize winners will each receive a medal and 2000 Euro.
EPS-QEOD Thesis Prizes 2017
Four EPS/QEOD prizes will reward excellence in PhD research and scientific communication in quantum electronics and optics related to a PhD thesis defended in the period June 2015 - June 2017. The prize winners are each to receive a diploma and 1000 Euro.

EPS Gero Thomas Medal

The EPS has two Early Career prizes to be awarded each year – one each for achievements of a mainly theoretical or experimental nature.
Those eligible for these awards should have made a substantial contribution to the development or reputation of physics in Europe. “Early Career” is defined as those individuals in the first 12 years of their career in physics following their first degree or equivalent, with allowance for any career breaks.

The deadline for the receipt of eligible nominations and supporting statements by the EPS Secretariat is 28 February 2017.

The Quantum Electronics and Optics Division and Young Minds
Action Committee of the European Physical Society offer travel grants
for PhD Students wishing to attend CLEO®/Europe-EQEC 2017
Grants
- Grants are available.
- The monetary sums are 500 € for PhD Students working in a country of the European Union (EU) or 1000 € for PhD Students working outside EU.
- The amount will be sent to the recipients by wire bank transfer.
Selection procedure and criteria
- A Committee composed by QEOD Board members and EPS Young Minds will review the applications.
- Grants will be awarded to PhD Students having not yet defended their thesis at the dates of the meeting.
- Only one grant will be awarded per person and per research group.
- Recipients must have an accepted oral or poster contribution at the conference.
Application procedure
- Applications must be made between October 17, 2016 and January 19, 2017 by using the online system for conference submissions (http://www.cleoeurope.org/)
- There, a special item points to the EPS-QEOD Travel Grant Student Awards.
- If you are interested in applying, below this item upload a double-page pdf file detailing
(i) your name, surname and date of birth,
(ii) your complete affiliation,
(iii) the title and the 35-word abstract of your contribution,
(iv) the starting date of your PhD and expected date of the PhD defense,
(v) your list of publications limited to the five most significant articles,
(vi) a support letter of your supervisor.
Notifications
- Results of the selection Committee will be sent to the applicants from March 17, 2017.

The European Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics and the European Quantum Electronics Conference will take place from Sunday 25 June to Thursday 29 June 2017 in Munich (ICM), Germany as part of the World of Photonics Congress and the Laser World of Photonics 2017, the world's leading laser trade fair.
The Congress will be the largest, most comprehensive and prestigious gathering of optics and photonics scientists and engineers organized in Europe in 2017.

John Pendry, professor of theoretical solid-state physics at Imperial College London and winner of the 2015 Prize for Fundamental Aspects of Quantum Electronics and Optics, has been nominated as winner of the Ugo Fano Gold Medal 2016 for the physics of metamaterials.
The Prize Award Ceremony will take place on 19 December 2016 at the Aula Marconi, CNR Headquarters in Rome, Italy.
