Evaluating the effects of the shift to on-line teaching

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in late 2019 and the ensuing lockdowns in early 2020 forced universities to move rapidly to distance teaching in order to minimize the spread of the disease. With very little time to prepare and in many cases little or no experience of on-line teaching, there was a strong sense of an emergency response to a crisis, with students showing  a great deal of understanding. However, with the summer of 2020 providing at least some opportunity to plan for the onset of the new academic year in the autumn of 2020, there has been an expectation that on-line teaching should provide an educational experience that matches students’ expectations. The Physics Education Division, working with the Higher Education Group of the Institute of Physics in London and GIREP, the International Group on Physics Education Research, is undertaking a project to evaluate the move to on-line teaching and we would appreciate your help, as readers of EPN, to gather information.

The survey is entirely anonymous and provides for short descriptive or reflective comments on up to three different activities. There are also a few questions aimed at some contextual information about the respondent, such as country, as well as a link to an independent survey which is intended only to provide the opportunity to supply contact details should you be happy to be contacted further. These details are not linked in any way to the teaching survey and there is no intention to link responses to specific individuals. In this way we hope to get an insight into views of on-line teaching across Europe.

We would also like to elicit the views of students across Europe and have prepared a similar survey. We would appreciate your help in distributing the link to your students regardless of whether you complete the staff survey or not. Again, the information is anonymous and is intentionally not linked to the staff survey. Nor does it ask for any information about individual members of academic staff or even the institution. Our aim is to evaluate whether students share the same perceptions as staff about what is effective or not in remote teaching.

The survey is open until July, but an early response would be appreciated, and we aim to report back through EPN with some conclusions about what is effective and why and where opportunities lie for further work in developing on-line teaching.

As a student of Physics, it would be valuable to hear your thoughts on the transition to online teaching and assessment in Physics in response to the Covid pandemic. What has worked well? What has been more challenging?  What changes would you like to see retained even when we are allowed to teach face-to-face again?

This survey is quick to answer and is gathering the views of physics students across Europe.  It is anonymous, and your thoughts are really valuable to inform future teaching of Physics.

EPS-QEOD Travel Grant Student Awards - deadline 19 January 2017

Action Committee of the European Physical Society offer travel grants 

for PhD Students wishing to attend CLEO®/Europe-EQEC 2017

 

Grants

  • Grants are available.
  • The monetary sums are 500 € for PhD Students working in a country of the European Union (EU) or 1000 € for PhD Students working outside EU.
  • The amount will be sent to the recipients by wire bank transfer.

 

Selection procedure and criteria

  • A Committee composed by QEOD Board members and EPS Young Minds will review the applications.
  • Grants will be awarded to PhD Students having not yet defended their thesis at the dates of the meeting.
  • Only one grant will be awarded per person and per research group.
  • Recipients must have an accepted oral or poster contribution at the conference.

 

Application procedure

  • Applications must be made between October 17, 2016 and January 19, 2017 by using the online system for conference submissions (http://www.cleoeurope.org/)
  • There, a special item points to the EPS-QEOD Travel Grant Student Awards.
  • If you are interested in applying, below this item upload a double-page pdf file detailing

(i) your name, surname and date of birth,

(ii) your complete affiliation,

(iii) the title and the 35-word abstract of your contribution,

(iv) the starting date of your PhD and expected date of the PhD defense,

(v) your list of publications limited to the five most significant articles,

(vi) a support letter of your supervisor.

 

Notifications

  • Results of the selection Committee will be sent to the applicants from March 17, 2017.

ESA Drop Your Thesis! - deadline for proposals 19 January 2014

The European Space Agency is proud to announce a new edition of the Drop Your Thesis! programme. Through this programme, a team of university students will be given the opportunity to carry out a microgravity experiment, at the ZARM Drop Tower Facility in Bremen, Germany. ZARM is one of the most sophisticated research centres of its kind in Europe and boasts a 146 m high tower that provides experiments with up to 9.3 seconds of microgravity.

The submission deadline for experiment proposals is January 19, 2014.

The selected team will perform its experiment during ESA's sixth Drop your Thesis! campaign, to be held in autumn 2014.

International Physics Olympiad 2013

The International Physics Olympiad is a prestigious  competition for secondary school students from all over the world. This year the IPhO was held in Copenhagen (Denmark) from 7 to 15 July 2013 and gathered together 374 secondary school students.

The European Physical Society is sponsoring the IPhO for a student award. This year, the award was attributed to Attila Szabó from Hungary and to Katerina Marinova Naydenova from Bulgaria. The award is meant to stimulate the interest of science and notably physics amongst youngsters.

In the 44th IPhO the students came from 81 countries. Amongst them were 18 girls. Attila Szabó from Hungary go the highest score of the olympiad (47 out of 50). He also got the best result for the theoretical problems (29.5 out of 30). The best score for the experiments was received by Calvin Lin Huang from the USA (18.4 out of 20). There were 41 gold medalists, 64 got silver, 101 got bronze and 64 students got an honourable mention.
