The Quantum Electronics and Optics Division (QEOD) of the European Physical Society (EPS) is soliciting nominations for the biennial Quantum Electronics and Optics Prizes, Fresnel Prizes and Thesis Prizes, which will be presented at the 2017 Edition of the CLEO/Europe-EQEC Conference in Munich, Germany, between Sunday 25 June and Thursday 29 June 2017.

Nominations are to be received on line by March 24th, 2017 at the latest. 

EPS Quantum Electronics & Optics Prizes

Two Quantum Electronics & Optics prizes are awarded for outstanding contributions to quantum electronics and optics. There is one prize for fundamental aspects and another one for applied aspects. Each Prize winner will receive a medal and 5000 Euro.

Fresnel Prizes 2017

Two EPS-QEOD prizes will be awarded for outstanding contributions to quantum electronics and optics made by young scientists before the age of 35 (as of December 31st, 2017). There is one prize for fundamental aspects and one prize for applied aspects. The prize winners will each receive a medal and 2000 Euro.

EPS-QEOD Thesis Prizes 2017

Four EPS/QEOD prizes will reward excellence in PhD research and scientific communication in quantum electronics and optics related to a PhD thesis defended in the period June 2015 - June 2017. The prize winners are each to receive a diploma and 1000 Euro.

This prize is awarded every second year for Applied Nuclear Science and Nuclear Methods in Medicine. Therefore the NPD board welcomes proposals which represent the breadth and strength in these fields in Europe.

In the past, the prize has been awarded for research in radiation biophysics, in the application of accelerator mass spectrometry, in the Ion Beam Analysis techniques in the field of Cultural Heritage studies, in tumor therapy with heavy ions, in the development of spin polarized 3He targets by optical pumping and in improving PET-scans.

Last winner in 2015, was Prof. Salehpour who has been awarded in recognition of the considerable impact he has made in the field of biomedical Accelerator Mass Spectrometry by facilitating routine analysis of ultra-small DNA samples in the microgram range. The Prize was presented to Prof. Salehpour at a ceremony during the 3rd European Nuclear Physics Conference, in Groningen, The Netherlands.

Nominations should be accompanied by a completed nomination form, a brief curriculum vitae of the nominee(s) and a list of relevant publications. Up to two letters of support from authorities in the field, outlining the importance of the work of the nominee(s), would also be helpful.

The deadline for the submission of the proposals is 15th January 2017.

Overview

The Quantum Electronics and Optics Division (QEOD) of the European Physical Society is presently soliciting nominations for their biennial prize Research into the Science of Light.  Details of the required material to provide are given below.

Nominations are to be received online by October 1st, 2016 at the latest. 

The European Physical Society (EPS) Prize for Research into the Science of Light is a major prize awarded on behalf of the EPS through its Quantum Electronics & Optics Division (QEOD). The prize is awarded every 2 years in recognition of recent work by one or more individuals (no more than three) for scientific excellence in the area of electromagnetic science in its broadest sense, across the entire spectrum of electromagnetic waves.

The work for which the individual(s) is/are nominated must be such that a significant component of it was performed during the period 5 years prior to the award.  In addition, the award will recognize research for which a significant portion of the work was carried out in Europe or in cooperation with European researchers, and may be given for either pure or applied research.

The award will be accompanied by an engraved glass medal, certificate, and a monetary sum of 2000 euros.

The Prize Ceremony and Lecture will be highlights of the EPS Nanometa Conference organized in Seefeld, Austria, from the 4th to 7th of January, 2017.

Nominations must include:

• A cover letter provided by the nominator with proposed citation
• A two-page summary of the significance of the work which is the subject of the nomination. For a nominated team of more than one person, the summary should clearly specify the individual contribution of each nominee, and when and where the work has been performed.
• Nominee CV(s)
• A list of publications covering the last five years (a few earlier articles particularly relevant for the nomination can also be included).  Five articles of most significance should be highlighted.
• Up to three letters of endorsement of the nomination.

In 2017, the Liquids Section of the EPS Condensed Matter Division will award the European Physical Society’s Liquid Matter Prize. The prize will be awarded to a single person who has made outstanding contributions to the science of liquid matter in the experimental or theoretical area and who is still active in research.  The award may be given for pure or applied research. 

The prize will be awarded during the 10th Liquid Matter Conference to be held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, 17–21 July 2017. We would appreciate receiving your suggestions for deserving candidates. The nomination must include a short citation and a brief description of the main achievements of the candidate. 

Nominations should be sent by email to the Chair of the Prize Jury, Professor Igor Musevic, Jozef Stefan Institute, Slovenia, igor.musevic@ijs.si no later than 1 June 2016.
