Monday 25th of March was the first day of the Young Minds (YM) Leadership Meeting (LM) at the EPS Forum 2024 in Berlin. More than 70 participants from the YM network, representing 30 YM sections, as well as guests from other associations, were welcomed by the LM organization committee chair Anna Grigoryan, the EPS Secretary General Anne Pawsey and EPS Former Chair Luc Berge. EPS YM former chair Mattia Ostinato presented an overview of the YM program and the newly elected YM chair Carmen Martín Valderrama was presented to the participants. Following two masterclasses on scientific writing given by the EDP Science Senior publisher Isabelle Auffret-Babak and Publishing Director Anne Ruimy, the participants attended the lecture given by Antigone Marino on Impostor Syndrome. Could not be missing the "From PhD to CEO" panel discussion, always inspiring, in collaboration with OPTICA. The panelists were Co-Founder of Keequant Imran Khan and Co-Founder of Quantune Jan Kischkat.

Tuesday 26th of March, the day started with the Nobel Prize Laureates' Lectures. The opportunity to attend such interesting sessions was allowed by the co-location with the EPS Forum. The morning continued with lecturer Tatevik Chalyan on writing a successful grant application, after which Steven Goldfarb presented the talk “Why we bother – the urgency of education and outreach”. To further connect with other YM delegates, a networking session was conducted and the LM concluded with the YM activity poster session and the corresponding “Young Minds Best activity award by EPL” ceremony where the YM sections PONYS and SPAM Caserta received the winner's certificates from EPL and 250 euros.

The meeting brought together YM delegates from more than 10 different countries, as well as many interested students and young researchers from outside of the YM network, making it a great success. Beyond the programme of the LM, the participants could learn about industrial opportunities and attend lectures from world-class researchers conducted in the EPS Forum. Thanks to the European Physical Society and Luc Bergé for the invitation and this opportunity and congratulations to the organization for the success of the event.

We believe that scientific outreach, cultural exchange and mutual understanding, and peaceful international collaboration are more important than ever and we believe that bringing young scientists together and equipping them with tools and skills is a great way of fostering these aspects.

We are very excited that so many young minds gathered for the meeting, and we are very much looking forward to the Leadership Meeting in 2025.

A useful advice for how you can grow your social media account

Posted By Administration, Thursday 6 April 2023
Author: Chrysa Avgerinou, EPS Young Minds

Have you ever wondered how to start up a social media account? How can you start from zero, grow it, make it famous and attractive to others? As a Public Relations (PR) manager of Young Minds NKUA Section (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), that is currently the section with the most followers on Instagram, I would like to share my one-year experience in social media management and provide you with a guide to help you succeed your goal and see your followers grow rapidly.

First of all, it is necessary to find the right team, consisted of people who have a strong passion for the subject your account promotes. Your team should include people who can communicate and collaborate with each other, are productive and willing to work for the rising of the team.

In addition, you must stay in a weekly contact with your audience. To succeed this, it would be nice to upload two or three posts ,stories or quizzes every week, to have interaction with your followers and awaken their interest. In order to prepare all this content, you must share responsibilities to different team members.

To set an example , our team is a group of young physicists aiming to promote science to everyone regardless of their age or education level. As a result, we try to make our content as simple as we can so it can  be addressed to the general public and to keep in touch with our followers by answering any question or message they may send to our account.

Furthermore, we try to divide our subject into sections such as Nuclear and Particle Physics, Astrophysics, Environmental Physics , Condensed Matter Physics ,Electronic and Automation and each team member takes over to make a weekly post about one of these categories, while someone else comes up with questions for our weekly quiz, someone else informs about new technologies and a different person deals with graphic design.

As you may notice, we are lucky enough to have a large PR team who carry out all these requirements while at the same time are ready to materialize new ideas and check for any mistakes made. But the most important qualification of our team members is their devotion and team spirit! Do not forget that if you have passion and love for what you do nothing can go wrong!

EPS Young Minds and Italian Physical Society: A fruitful collaboration

Posted By Administration, Tuesday 15 November 2022
Updated: Thursday 17 November 2022
Authors: Mattia Ostinato and Antigone Marino

Networking between learned societies is a key endeavour in physics, and bridging the gap between international and national societies is an important part of that. The European Physical Society (EPS) embraces this principle with its federative nature and by directly supporting events going along such direction.

The EPS Young Minds Project, created with the aim of connecting young physicists all over the Euromediterranean area and foster their activities, also follows this path.

This Year, EPS Young Minds, collaborated with the Italian Physical Society (SIF) and the Italian Association of Physics Students (AISF) to organize a focus session aimed at young physicists in the context of the 108th  SIF National Congress which took place in Milan from the 12th to the 16th of September.

The composition of  the organizing committee, formed by Dr. Antigone Marino (SIF Board Member), Federica De Domenico (AISF President) and Mattia Ostinato (EPS YM Action Committee Chair) and representatives of the local YM and AISF local groups, reflected the spirit of collaboration between different entities on both national and international level that societies such as SIF and EPS try to foster in their activities.

The session itself, was also devised to be deeply interdisciplinary, with a scientific program whose underlying theme was climate change and  energetic transition a topic highly appealing to young physicists

The event took place on the morning of the 15th of September at the  Polytehnical University of Milan (PoliMi), and was opened by remarks from SIF President Prof. Angela Bracco, Dr. Marino, and Prof. Paolo Biagioni representing PoliMi, who welcomed the more then 50 students attendees.

After a brief introduction to YM and AISF, made by the respective chairs, the scientific session started with Prof Francesco Romanelli (University of Rome “Tor Vergata”) , who talked about the physics behind nuclear fusion and the state of the art technology currently employed in realizing fusion reactors for producing electrical energy. Its talk was followed by Dr. Davide Faccialà (Institute of photonics and nanotechnology- National Research Council), on how the techniques of ultrafast spectroscopy are used to investigate the energy harvesting properties of perovskites, and its application to the design of better performing solar panels.

The event was closed by Prof. Claudia Pasquero (University Milano Bicocca), whose talk was focused on the extreme interconnectedness of climate as a physical system, how physics studies it, and how even small changes can lead to extreme climate events.

The session had a very good success, reflected also by the intensity of the Q&A sessions, where the young participants showed all their interest for the topics and engaged in a fruitful discussion with all the speakers.

Such success is yet another example on how the interaction between national society like SIF and  international federative societies, such as EPS, can not only reinforce the bonds within them, but also foster the realization of important events and have an impact on the next generation of researchers.

Young Minds Lisbon Movie Night — 2nd edition

Posted By Administration, Tuesday 4 October 2022

Author: Duarte Esteves

On the evening of 1st July 2022, the Lisbon EPS Young Minds section organised the second edition of the “Young Minds Movie Night”. Just like the previous edition, this event took place in the cloister of the Lisbon Museum of Natural History and Science. This outreach activity targeted a broad and general audience, and the main goal was teaching Physics to everyone in a fun and relaxed way.

In the spirit of the previous edition, this activity consisted of two parts: the screening of a film and a light talk on the subject. This time, the 1981 BBC documentary The Pleasure of Finding Things Out, starring the famous physicist Richard Feynman, was exhibited. The participants were invited to bring their own blankets and watch the documentary with their friends and family while enjoying the complimentary popcorn and beverages we provided.

Afterwards, Prof. Mário Pinheiro, from our home institute, Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon, gave an exciting lecture titled “Off the Beaten Path: Celebrating Feynman — the Great Explainer”. After briefly introducing some important aspects of Feynman’s childhood, including some that were also mentioned in the documentary itself, Prof. Pinheiro shared some anecdotes that conveyed Feynman’s particular views on what it means to really learn and understand something, including, for instance, the famous Feynman technique for learning. Subsequently, Prof. Pinheiro highlighted some of Feynman’s main contributions to Physics, such as his role in the development of Quantum Electrodynamics, for which he won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965.

Thus, with this event, it was possible to introduce our audience to an inspiring physicist from both a personal and a professional point of view. In the end, the feedback was very much positive, confirming once again that this event model, combining the screening of a film and a lecture by an expert, is a very effective way to promote Physics to the general public and certainly warrants a third edition in the near future!

EPS Young Minds Leadership Meeting 2022

Posted By Administration, Thursday 9 June 2022

Authors: Richard Zeltner and Carmen Martín Valderrama

The 2022 Young Minds Leadership Meeting took place from June 2 to June 3 at the EPS Forum 2022 at Sorbonne University in Paris. On June 2 more than 40 delegates from the YM network, as well as guest from IAPS, were welcomed by the LM organization committee chair Mattia Ostinato and EPS YM Chair Richard Zeltner. Following a networking event, the participants attended the various industrial sessions of the EPS Forum, learning about the career opportunities for scientists outside of academia. In the afternoon Jean-François Morizur gave an inspiring "From PhD to CEO" workshop, that was moderated by Yann Amouroux from the European office of Optica.

On June 3 the LM concluded with inspiring talks from Prof. Petra Rudolf and Giuliana Galati, and the YM Poster Session in which the section delegates shared their recent activities with the rest of the YM network. After three years of virtual engagement the meeting brought together YM delegates from 20 different countries, as well as many interested students and young researchers from outside of the YM network, making it a great success. Beyond the programme of the LM, the co-location with the EPS Forum allowed the participants to learn about industrial opportunities and to attend lectures from world-class researchers, including 3 Nobel Laureates. Thanks to the European Physical Society and its president Luc Bergé for the invitation and this opportunity and congratulations to the organization for the success of the event.

We believe that scientific outreach, cultural exchange and mutual understanding, and peaceful international collaboration are more important than ever, and we believe that bringing young scientists together and equipping them with tools and skills is a great way of fostering these aspects. This said, we are very happy that so many young minds gathered for the meeting, and we are very much looking forward to the Leadership Meeting in 2023.

EPS Young Minds Lisbon: Mental Health @ Técnico

Posted By Administration, Tuesday 10 May 2022
Updated: Tuesday 17 May 2022
Author: EPS Young Minds Lisbon section

In April 2022, the Lisbon Young Minds section organised the event “Mental Health @ Técnico”, at their home institution, Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), with the goal of discussing the very important topic of mental health, with a particular emphasis on academic contexts. This event comprised two different moments, a workshop and a round table.

The first session, which took place on 5th April, consisted of the workshop named “Academy diploma? Yes, but don’t forget your mental health!” given by Dr. Isabel Gonçalves, psychologist and head of the Academic Development Office of IST. During this workshop, the participants were invited to share their ideas and personal experiences concerning mental health in general and from the point of view of a student getting their bachelor’s, master’s or PhD diploma.

The second session, which took place on the 7th of April, consisted of the round table titled “Mental Health in Academia — Let’s Talk About It!”, also moderated by Dr. Gonçalves. The panel of this event was quite diverse, to represent several points of view within the academic community. More specifically, it was comprised by Prof. Luís Oliveira e Silva, full professor at the Physics Department of IST and president of the School Council; Dr. Daniela Magalhães, psychiatrist; Mariana Moreira, PhD student and member of the IST Student Club for Mental Health and Inclusion; and Marta Bárbolo, MSc student and member of the IST Student Support Unit. Moreover, the participants themselves also played a major role in the discussion, either by asking questions to the panel, or by sharing their own points of view. The plurality of ideas thus promoted a very interesting, thoughtful and enlightening debate, which contributed not only to identify some of the main issues related with mental health that exist within the IST community — not only among the students, but also among the professors and the staff —, but also to discuss and propose solutions to address and mitigate them.

In brief, this event fully achieved its intended goal: promoting a fruitful discussion on the topic of mental health at IST. The participants’ feedback was very positive: both the audience and the round table panel agreed that it was definitely a successful event that encouraged an ongoing open debate on this important matter, and contributed to the personal development of the participants.

Skilling Me Softly

Posted By Administration, Tuesday 10 May 2022
Updated: Tuesday 17 May 2022
Author: Sofia Facal Belli

The Oxford Dictionary describes soft skills as "Personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people". Although traditionally soft skills may have been thought to play a minor role (especially in the scientific world) they are core skills that are now thought to be crucial in the development and advancement in the scientific career and in life. "How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives" famously said by writer Annie Dillard.

According to Dom Bernard (March 2019, http://www.virtualspeech.com) soft skills are those personal attributes that influence how well you can work and interact with others and are essential for your success, your company's success and indeed your personal success. And since for most of us, a significant part of our day is spent at work (90,000 hours), we can safely say that your job can a make a huge impact on your happiness and quality of life.

As stated previously since the importance soft skills vs hard skills is often undervalued in the scientific career, there is far less training provided for them. Scientists from STEM fields have dedicated much effort, time and passion developing "hard skills" when, in fact, establishing relationships, creating trust, negotiating, public speaking, or scientific writing (and many more) are essential for a successful career.  The lack of soft skills can be a limiting factor for a person's full potential and can possibly be detrimental to your advancement in the scientific career as well.

Automation and AI will result in a greater proportion of jobs relying on soft skills. It is interesting to note that 94% of recruiters believe that people with strong soft skills will have a better chance of success that employees with years of hard skill experience. (ICIMS Insights 2017)

Do your soft skills need improvement?

We at Skills4Science specialize in helping the Scientific Community develop and/or enhance Soft Skills. At our workshops we have a diverse range of training topics to strengthen this very important skills, including and not limited to Problem Solving, Networking,  Public Speaking, Written Communication and Transformational Leadership.

We help research centers, universities, and start-ups in the field to design the best training plans for individuals, teams and institutions.

Women in Optics and Photonics in Spain

Posted By Administration, Tuesday 15 March 2022
Updated: Thursday 17 March 2022
Authors: Rosa Ana Pérez-Herrera and Verónica González-Fernández

Gender bias in STEM areas is a palpable reality that we cannot ignore. To face this challenge, the involvement of institutions and scientific societies is vital. The Spanish Optical Society (SEDOPTICA) is committed to being inclusive, striving to provide an environment where all people feel valued and respected, and also have access to the same opportunities. The Women in Optics and Photonics Area started working in 2018 with the following activities:

MENTORING PROGRAMME

This programme aims to connect women researchers to offer a professional support network:

Connected women scientists
Connected Women Scientists is a series of periodic meetings where we invite women scientists to give technical talks grouped by topic. From May 2020, the format was moved to webinar format, reaching a total attendance of 330 users (visit: SEDOPTICA-Youtube channel).

Count on them
Count on them initiative compiles short reviews of women researchers in optics and photonics to promote and facilitate the organisation of gender equal, peer-to-peer events. The objective is to create an open database for anyone who wants to use it when looking for speakers for their events. This initiative also enhances the visibility of their scientific work to other people, such as journalists or people required for counselling on these areas of expertise.

MEET THE WOMEN RESEARCHERS

The 'Meet the Women Researchers' programme was launched in January 2019, with the aim of disseminating the work and experiences in their careers at all levels, from predoctoral to emeritus professors. The women participating in this activity belong to both academia and industry. So far we have 34 interviews with different researchers/teachers/technologists/disseminators of Optics and Photonics.  Written and video interviews have received about 6700 and 500 views, respectively.

DISSEMINATION PROGRAMME AND SOCIAL MEDIA

Quantitative analysis of the situation of women in optics and photonics in Spain
We are currently collecting quantitative data about the situation of women researchers in the field of Optics and Photonics in Spain. We are performing a statistical study of the doctoral theses defended in Spain in the last five years. To do so, we are using the Ministry of Education's TESEO database, and classifying them according to UNESCO codes. The theses were classified separating whether these descriptors had been chosen by men or women. This study will be presented in the IEEE EDUCON2022 (March, Tunisia), and published as proceeding.

We continue working in these kinds of studies to offer more detailed analysis.
