EPS Divisions and Groups are the scientific heart of the EPS.
They organize conferences, award prizes and provide input to
the EPS on issues of importance in their specific field.
Divisions represent specific fields of physics and Groups
are concerned with cross discipline issues.
All Individual
Members are encouraged to join the Divisions and Groups, and to
participate in their activities.
You should join at least one
division, close to your own field of physics. Groups always
need interested IMs, so please look at their activities as well. Read more about EPS Divisions and Groups. Join EPS Divisions and Groups.

Recent years have seen quantitative bibliometric indicators being increasingly used as a central element in the assessment of the performance of scientists, either individually or as groups, and as an important factor in evaluating and scoring research proposals. These indicators are varied, and include e.g. citation counts of individual papers published by researchers; the impact factors of the journals in which they publish; and measures that quantify personal research contributions over an extended period such as the Hirsch H-index, and variants with corrections such as the G-index. Download the EPS statement here.

The "Second Conference of Fermi Centre Projects” took place on 19-20
April this year in Rome, Italy, in the temporary headquarters of the Museo Storico della Fisica e Centro Studi e Ricerche "Enrico Fermi”, which is presently located on the premises of the Italian Ministry of the Interior.
The conference focused on the presentation of the results and
perspectives of the advanced inter- and multi-disciplinary research
projects currently underway at the center. About 250 scientists,
researchers and professors took part in this gathering, accompanied by a
number of high school teachers and students.
A plenary session took place, in the conference hall of the Ministry of
the Interior, on the morning of the second day. Activities were opened
by Annamaria Cancellieri, the Italian Minister of the Interior, and
Luisa Cifarelli, the President of both the European and Italian Physical
Societies, as well as of the Fermi Centre.
A keynote speech detailing the fundamental scientific research undertaken in the nineteen thirties by Enrico
Fermi, at the Institute of Panisperna Street, Rome, was delivered by
Antonino Zichichi. The crucial and symbolic importance of the "Fermi
fountain” in the history of physics was highlighted in his address.
The morning session of the conference concluded with a visit of the Head
of State to the "Fermi fountain” during which a commemorative marble
plate was unveiled, designating the fountain as a Historic Site of the European Physical Society.
The ceremony was undertaken in the presence of the President of the
Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano; the Minister of the Interior,
Annamaria Cancellieri; the Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities,
Lorenzo Ornaghi; and the Undersecretary of State for Education,
University and Research, Elena Ugolini.
The Fermi Centre is one of the youngest Italian scientific institutions.
Formed in 2001 under the ten-year presidency of Antonino Zichichi – who
was also president of the European Physical Society from 1978-1980 –
the Fermi Centre implements important research projects, promotes the
dissemination of scientific culture and gives top priority to talented
young scientists.
Soon it will take up permanent residence in the former Physics Institute
of Panisperna Street: which, embedded in the building complex of the
Ministry of the Interior, is currently being restored.
Located in the institute’s garden, the "Fermi fountain” – the
restoration of which has already been completed – is the famous goldfish
pond that Enrico Fermi used, establishing for the first time – on 22
October 1934 – the importance of hydrogen-rich substances, like water,
in slowing down fast neutrons for nuclear fission reactions.
In his address, Cancellieri underlined how the involvement of the
European Physical Society significantly enhanced the importance of the
event, testifying to the determination – since 1968 – of European
scientists towards strengthening the cultural unity of science in
Europe.

An article published in EPL was featured in the French daily newspaper Le Monde on 29 November. The piece, ‘Comment la goutte d’eau lévite sur le fil de la scie’, concerns the article ‘Viscous mechanism for Leidenfrost propulsion on a ratchet’1, by G. Dupeux, M. Le Merrer, G. Lagubeau, C. Clanet, S. Hardt and D. Quéré, which was published in volume 96, issue 5 of EPL. "An evaporating drop placed on a ratchet self-propels, as discovered by Linke et al. in 2006. Sublimating platelets do the same, and we discuss here a possible viscous mechanism for these motions. We report that the flow of vapor below EPL is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by IOP Publishing on behalf of the European Physical Society. ‘Comment la goutte d’eau lévite sur le fil de la scie’ can be read on the Le Monde website. An English translation is also available, by means of Google Translate. ‘Viscous mechanism for Leidenfrost propulsion on a ratchet’ can be read on the EPL website.

The European Physical Society is
delighted to announce the official start of a global project aiming at a
United Nations proclamation of an International Year of Light in 2015.
The project prospectus can now be downloaded here.
Light plays a central
role in human activities in science, technology and culture. Light
itself underpins the existence of life, and light-based technologies
will guide and drive the future development of human society. Light and
optics have revolutionized medicine, have opened up international
communication via the Internet, and continue to be central to linking
cultural, economic and political aspects of the global society.
Advances in lighting and solar energy are considered crucial for future
sustainable development.
Scientists and educators,
in a large variety of scientific disciplines ranging from physics, to
astronomy, to chemistry and material science, to biology, etc., are very
well aware of the tremendous importance of optical science and
technology for future international development. But as the application
of light through the field of photonics becomes the key cross-cutting
discipline of science in the 21st century, it is critical that the
brightest young minds continue to be attracted into science and
engineering careers in this field.
It is the need to promote
improved public and political understanding of the central role of
light in the modern world which has motivated EPS to coordinate a
proposal for the proclamation of an International Year of Light in 2015
under the auspices of the United Nations. As well as celebrating the
anniversaries of important milestones in the history of science that
fall in 2015, the International Year of Light project will include
important aspects of education and development, focusing specifically on
how the science of light can improve the quality of life in the
developing world and in emerging economies.
"Light is an immediate and
fascinating topic, but also inter- and multidisciplinary in all its
numerous forms,” says EPS President Professor Luisa Cifarelli. "It is
ideal to be chosen for the declaration of an 'International Year'.”
The project involves many
international partners, representing major international scientific
societies from all branches of physics. The release of the prospectus
will be followed by a formal request for endorsement at the
International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) General Assembly
in November 2011. This is the important first step in the process to
approach the United Nations.
