Share African Physics Newsletters with your colleagues

Posted By Administration, Tuesday 13 October 2020
Author: Luc Bergé and Joe Niemela

A fairer and more sustainable future for our increasingly interconnected world calls for a better balance in the access to knowledge between countries in the North and South. The requirements for sustainable science and technology ecosystems include high-level education and basic research, and the dissemination of scientific thought and ideas, that can, in turn, inspire creators of innovative technologies. African physicists are making exceptional efforts addressing these challenges, including new and effective communication strategies described below, all while facing the global pandemic.

To know more, read the August issue of The African Physics Newsletter (APN)

https://us19.campaign-archive.com/?u=63e42c583930d9f7a8b637982&id=274f14a00c

The African Physics Newsletter (APN) is a quarterly publication produced by and for African physicists that fosters communication among physicists in Africa, the diaspora community, and the broader international physics community.

This newsletter is the result of a survey of African physics that was conducted by the “Physics in Africa” Project, a cooperative effort between the South African Institute of Physics, the European Physical Society, the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, the UK Institute of Physics, and the American Physical Society (APS). The goal of the project was to assess the state of physics in various African nations by inquiring directly with scientific leaders there, and then to identify specific initiatives the international physics community could take to help those nations promote physics in their countries.

This survey revealed a need for a Pan-African communication vehicle with and among African physicists. The APN helps fill this need and allows African physicists to communicate among themselves and share with their peers outside Africa important pieces of information about the physics conducted in Africa. It highlights physics research, current events, meetings, and resources from across the African continent.

The news items are gathered, selected, and composed by a volunteer editorial board of African physicists representing all regions of Africa and the American Physical Society (APS) serves as its publisher. With in-person meetings and collaborations hindered by the global pandemic, the newsletter provides a valuable opportunity for physicists to share information and updates with a broad audience.

For example, the most recent issue of the African Physics Newsletter amplifies the voices of Africans about the challenges and lessons learned following the shut down of schools, research facilities, and the experience of students in the time of covid-19. The need for inclusiveness, and eliminating racism in our societies, is also addressed.

Likewise, other past issues can be found at the link above. To further amplify these voices and support physics in Africa, we ask that you share this newsletter with colleagues and encourage them to join the mailing list to receive future issues. The success of the newsletter depends on its readership and its ability to publish and spread interesting news articles. EPS, therefore, encourages you and your colleagues to subscribe.

To do so, simply go to the website go.aps.org/africanphysics.

In advance we thank you very much for your active support.

Solar kits at the COP22 in Marrakech

Posted By Administration, Tuesday 29 November 2016

Assembling solar kits and delivering light to the urban area of Beni-Mellal
Visit and presentation of the project at COP22 Marrakech conference

A report by Enrique Sánchez, member of the EPS Young Minds Project

During the second week of November 2016, the EPS Young Minds project, in close cooperation with the associations Migrations Co-developpement Alsace, Liter of light France and the University of Beni Mellal, developed solar kits lamps. The group of more than 30 assembled the different components collected for the project "Solar lamp kits". Once ready, these solar kits were aimed to be delivered to families and other workers in places where the use of light is often limited due to geographical or economical reasons.

A few days later, the group attended the UN Climate Change Conference [COP22] held in Marrakech, Morocco from the 7-18 November 2016. The project was presented with a poster exhibited throughout the conference and with a talk given by representatives of the associations involved. The project could partly be developped with the help of the "EPS Special Activity Fund" provided by the European Physical Society.

Description of the project

The Project was carried out in the following three phases:
1. Presentation of the project to the students of the University of Beni Mellal and the assembly of the solar kits
2. Delivery to families and people in need
3. Presentation at the COP22 conference

1. Presentation of the project to the students of the University of Beni Mellal and the assembly of the solar kits

During the first three days of my visit, I could interact with the student chapter of Beni Mellal. During the presentation of the project, they were attracting new students to participate in the project providing information and spreading the word among other students. On Monday 7th the project was presented in the auditorium of the university with a participation of more than 50 people and a local news reporter.

Presentation
• Introduction by Prof. Mustapha Mabrouki, Head of the Physics department of the   University of Beni Mellal
• Liter of light France – Lucie Baron
• EPS Young Minds project – Enrique Sánchez Bautista
• Beni Mellal student chapter – Youssef Najih
• Migrations Co-developpement Alsace – Ahmed Ouarab

Description and assembly of the solar kits
After the presentation held on Monday 7th in the morning, during that afternoon and on Tuesday 8th, about 20 students were actively participating in the assembly of the kits, both in the mechanical workshop making the metal structure and in the electronics lab setting up the elements of the devices. Each device consists of: a solar panel, cables, a battery, a light bulb into a plastic bottle and a plastic box (where all the connectors and electricity distributors are located).

2. Delivery to families and people in need

On Wednesday 9th, the solar kits were delivered to families in need and workers in areas with a lack of proper light distribution systems. The highly motivated students were crucial to the success of the activity by delivering all the kits on time.

3. Presentation at the COP22 conference

On Thursday 10th, Prof. Mustapha Mabrouki, Lucie Baron, Ahmed Ouarab and I were presenting the Project developed in the University of Beni Mellal and in the villages of Bouachouch and Oulad Mbark in the COP22 conference. The talk was very successful with many questions along all the event. Additionally, one poster was presented in the stand of the Conference of Presidents of the Moroccan Universities, CPU, located on the green pavilion of the COP22 conference.

Overall impression

I found a very energetic and highly motivated group of students willing to participate in new activities. Not only the senior members of the student chapter were motivated; many other students were participating performing great work and spirit of cooperation. What I could see is that, apparently, these activities including direct participation of the students in projects working in teams -both boys and girls-, are not as common as in other locations. During the last day of the workshop, students were acknowledging us because these kinds of projects allow them to work in teams and cooperate and interact with each other.

Considering both the high degree of motivation of many of the students as well as the real and positive impact that this activity has supposed to the recipients of the light devices, from my point of view, I see highly recommendable to continue promoting these kinds of activities and this project in particular.

Posted By Administration, Tuesday 7 August 2012

Dear All,

The European Physical Society - Physics for Development Group organizes a Symposium dedicated to physicists willing to help Research Center and Universities from Developing Countries increasing their research capabilities.

The Symposium will be held in Brussels - Belgium 11-12 October 2012. Special grants and subsidies are foreseen for reducing the trip/accomodation/fees burden of participants from developing countries.

Do not hesitate to contact the organizing committee for arranging your trip/accomodation.

Thanks in advance for your interest and see you soon in Brussels!
