EPS Physics Education Division Award for Secondary School Teaching

Posted By Administration, Tuesday 2 December 2014

The European Physical Society, acting through its Physics Education Division, grants the Award for Secondary School Teaching subject to the following criteria:

  • The award should be made to an individual high school teacher. (It is not a team award.)
  • The award should recognize work that directly affects students of physics in one or more European secondary schools. (What constitutes a secondary school may be broadly interpreted, but specifically excludes primary schools and universities.)
  • The award should recognize a specific contribution to teaching, particularly one that might be taken up in a range of countries. (It is not a lifetime achievement award, nor is it an award for research into teaching, but teaching may be broadly interpreted and should include activities that encourage students to take up the study of physics or improve access to the study of physics.)

The award consists of a certificate and a sum of money to the amount of  € 1,000.

The award will be presented during the GIREP-EPEC conference, which will take place from July 6-10, 2015, in Wrocław, Poland.  The award winner is normally provided with additional funding to allow attendance at the conference.

The award committee consists of four ordinary members and a chair, all nominated by the EPS Physics Education Division.

A single nomination is invited from each National Physical Society belonging to the EPS in the year of the award. The nomination should be no longer than 500 words and should be in English. In order for the committee to be able to take into account the conditions under which the nominee’s work was carried out, the covering letter should address the following issues:

  • In what type of school does the nominee teach (state or private, general or specialized)?
  • What type of courses does the nominee teach (regular physics courses, special courses for small groups of interested students, interdisciplinary subjects, other subjects in addition to physics)?
  • If the nominated contribution comprises a specific activity or project, did the nominee have a full teaching obligation during its conception, design and execution, or was the teaching load reduced to enable the activity to be developed?

The Societies are particularly encouraged to nominate individuals who have already won a national prize or award. The Societies are also encouraged to consult national associations of physics/science teachers regarding suitable candidates.

The nominations should be sent to:

European Physical Society
6 rue des Frères Lumière
68200 Mulhouse
France

Email: secretariat@eps.org

in paper and electronic format before March 16th 2015.

Emmy Noether Distinction: nominate a deserving (woman) physicist

Posted By Administration, Tuesday 18 November 2014
Updated: Tuesday 18 November 2014

In 2013, the European Physical Society [EPS] launched the Emmy Noether Distinction to recognize noteworthy women physicists.

Emmy Nother was an influential theoretical physicist, and a role model for future generations of physicists. The laureates of the Emmy Noether Distinction are chosen for their capacity to inspire the next generation of scientists, and especially encourage women to handle careers in physics.

The first prizes were awarded to:

  • Dr. Alessandra Gatti, for her contributions to physics, the introduction of concepts of quantum images, spatial entanglement, and quantum entangled images.
  • Professor Nynke Dekker, for her research including the study of different proteins on DNA and RNA.
  • Dr. Rumiana Dimova, for her distinguished contributions to membrane biophysics.

The EPS Emmy Noether Distinction for Women in Physics is awarded twice a year: in winter and in summer. The selection committee, appointed by the EPS Equal Opportunities Committee, will consider nominations for woman scientists working in Europe.

To make a nomination, please email the following information to the EPS Secretariat:
- A cover letter, detailing (in no more than 3 paragraphs) the motivation for awarding the Emmy Noether distinction to the nominee;
- The nominee’s name, institution and email;
- The nominee’s résumé;
- The nominator’s name, institution, and email.

The distinction charter can be downloaded here.

A new publication frequency for EPN

Posted By Administration, Tuesday 18 November 2014
Updated: Tuesday 18 November 2014

At the 2014 EPS Council meeting it was decided to reallocate some funds to finance EPS activities in Brussels. For EPN this means that, for 2014 and 2015, the last two issues will be merged into one 48-pages issue (5&6, published in November), which saves distribution costs. As you may have noticed already, there is now also a flip book pdf version with an html version that is indexed by Google. This user-friendly flip book will be available for all issues (see:http://www.zyyne.com/widgetdoc;13732).

EPS Plasma Physics Innovation Prize 2015: call for nominations

Posted By Administration, Thursday 9 October 2014

Research in Plasma Physics has multiple and rich outcomes with direct and/or indirect applications. These applications, which are sometimes inconspicuous and even unknown to the layman, can have significant impacts on daily human life as well as on economic activity. Surprisingly, some of the impacts seem far from the basic Plasma Physics research which gave birth to these key original ideas, but nonetheless represent exemplary innovative strategies. Today, applications of Plasma Physics flourish in vastly different domains, such as radioactive waste transmutation, medicine, isotope separation processes (with fundamental applications to cancer therapy), infection treatment, material processing, torch cutting and welding, flat TV screens, lighting systems, thrusters, as well as countless other medical, industrial and engineering applications. Within the general framework of the relationship between "Science and Society", there is a strong effort on communication between research and public domains in many countries.

The European Physical Society is keenly aware of these important applications. As a dual gesture of stimulation and recognition, a new annual prize has been created by the Plasma Physics Division of the European Physical Society. This prize targets research which has demonstrably led to robust innovative applications or important effects on society. Nominations in any fields are encouraged.

Establishment and Support
The prize has been established in 2008 and supported by the Plasma Physics Division of the European Physics Society. The Prize is given once a year and consists of 3000 euros and a certificate citing the contributions made by the recipient.  More information and previous winners can be found at :  http://plasma.ciemat.es/eps/awards/innovation-award/

Rules and eligibility :
Nominees need not now be working on the topics. Any work may be submitted. The recognized contribution may be a product, a process or a tool enabling practical application issued directly from plasma physics field.
Existing applications (i.e. excluding those expected to be developped within a short time or forthcoming future) will be taken into consideration. Moreover, applications developped in areas outside the plasma research field in which these were born will be analyzed by the jury. High technology products /tools which represent only extensions of works developped in the same original research field will be not considered.
Nominees need not to be EPS members. Nominees candidatures are submitted by nominators as detailed below. Proposals for prize sharing are also admitted. There is no restriction in terms of geography and/or nationality.

Nominations and selection Process
A broad spectrum of nominations and in particular from companies/institutions/National and/or Universities laboratories are encouraged to apply. To complete the nomination, you (the nominator) are asked to provide the EPS Plasma Physics Innovation Prize nomination form by November 1st 2014.

Completed forms should be sent to:
Chair of the EPS Plasma Physics Division, Dr. Sylvie Jacquemot, LULI, Ecole Polytechnique, 91128 Palaiseau cedex, France
Email address: sylvie.jacquemot@polytechnique.edu
