Beamline for Schools
Beamline for Schools 2024 is about to start! This physics competition for high school students from all around the
world invites them to propose an experiment that they want to perform
at a beamline. The popular competition reaches its 10th anniversary
in 2024. Three winning teams will be selected, two teams will perform
their experiments at CERN and one at DESY.
There will be additional
prizes for up to 40 selected teams (https://beamline-for-schools.web.cern.ch/bl4s-competition/prizes). All the prospective participants who preregister to the competition (https://beamlineforschools.cern/form/preregistration-2024)
will have the possibility to follow online events and virtual visits
prior to the submission of their proposal.
The deadline to submit a
proposal is 10 April 2024 at 23:59 CEST.

CERN International Teacher Programmes 2024
The
application process for CERN’s international teacher programmes 2024
opens on 1st November 2023! The HST Programme will take place from 30 June
- 14 July 2024 and the ITW Programme will take place from 4th-17th August
2024!

Education systems around the world cannot follow the extremely fast
development of science and technology, which is why methods should be
developed to give children an insight into STEM areas and motivate them
to turn to modern professions at an early age.
In the last two
years, the Croatian Physical Society has been implementing the project
"Scientific education from an early age" supported by the Croatian
Ministry of Science and Education. The main purpose of the project is
the introduction of modern physics topics in kindergartens and schools,
with emphasis on the teaching of physics from the age of four. The
results of the program are beyond expectations. The children are
enthusiastic about physics and want more.
Within these activities,
children are introduced not only to basic physical concepts, but also
to current topics of today's science and technology. Topics include
entering the atomic level, understanding how a computer works to the
black hole at the center of our galaxy. All activities are based on a
multitude of experiments that introduce physical concepts in an
interesting way. The aim of these activities is to emphasize the
importance of physical experiments and scientific model in all levels of
education.
To illustrate how children perceive these topics, here are some of their statements after the program (age 5-6 years):
- I liked Schroedinger's cat the most.
- I liked drawing a lot of electrons. And count the electrons in the Radium atom.
- I didn’t know about atoms before, and now I know they made nature.
- I learned that lightning has energy.
As
a contribution to these activities, our member Nikola Poljak published a
series of booklets "Physics for Children 3+" entitled ABC Physics,
Mechanics, Optics, Thermodynamics, and Nuclear Physics.

Following last March’s great success with more than 1100 schools from around the world involved in the activity, we are happy to announce the Eratosthenes Experiment March 2017, which will take place on the 21st of March, 2017 (a day after the spring equinox day)! Do not miss the opportunity to participate in this fascinating international event! Take part through your school by registering at the website with your school’s longitude and latitude. Once you are registered, you will be put in touch with a school from the same longitude with you by the organizing team. Together with your partner school, you will record data, collaborate, calculate the circumference of the Earth and submit the data.
In order to stand a chance to win a scholarship to attend the 2017 European Science Education Academy (ESEA) Summer School in Greece, take a photo of your experiment and submit it until the 14th of April along with your data. More info at: http://eratosthenes.ea.gr/content/photo-contest-march-2017
Please note that the Eratosthenes Experiment official website has been upgraded. From now on, you can create your account and make use of it in order to register your school, submit & store your experiment data to compare them with future data, and upload to the gallery of Eratosthenes website photos from the experiment taking part at your school (or another location).

The European Physical Society, acting through its Physics Education Division, grants the Award for Secondary School Teaching subject to the following criteria: - The award should be made to an individual high school teacher. (It is not a team award.)
- The award should recognize work that directly affects students of physics in one or more European secondary schools. (What constitutes a secondary school may be broadly interpreted, but specifically excludes primary schools and universities.)
- The award should recognize a specific contribution to teaching, particularly one that might be taken up in a range of countries. (It is not a lifetime achievement award, nor is it an award for research into teaching, but teaching may be broadly interpreted and should include activities that encourage students to take up the study of physics or improve access to the study of physics.)
The award consists of a certificate and a sum of money to the amount of € 1,000. The award will be presented during the GIREP-EPEC conference, which will take place from July 6-10, 2015, in Wrocław, Poland. The award winner is normally provided with additional funding to allow attendance at the conference. The award committee consists of four ordinary members and a chair, all nominated by the EPS Physics Education Division. A single nomination is invited from each National Physical Society belonging to the EPS in the year of the award. The nomination should be no longer than 500 words and should be in English. In order for the committee to be able to take into account the conditions under which the nominee’s work was carried out, the covering letter should address the following issues: - In what type of school does the nominee teach (state or private, general or specialized)?
- What type of courses does the nominee teach (regular physics courses, special courses for small groups of interested students, interdisciplinary subjects, other subjects in addition to physics)?
- If the nominated contribution comprises a specific activity or project, did the nominee have a full teaching obligation during its conception, design and execution, or was the teaching load reduced to enable the activity to be developed?
The Societies are particularly encouraged to nominate individuals who have already won a national prize or award. The Societies are also encouraged to consult national associations of physics/science teachers regarding suitable candidates. The Inspiring Science Education International Summer Academy will take place in Attica, Greece, from 13 to 18 July 2014.
The aim of the Academy is to support the professional development of teachers and trainers by offering access to a unique collection of open digital educational resources (e.g. remote labs, virtual experimentations, augmentations, simulations). Participants will be trained to link these resources with innovative pedagogical practices, implementing resource based and project-based approaches, in order to design educational scenarios by repurposing existing eLearning tools. Teachers will also be trained to appropriately select and exploit freely available existing eLearning tools and resources in their educational scenarios that suit their own needs in terms of planning, implementing and sharing pedagogical ideas, managing their classroom and organizing the curriculum. This will further empower them to create effective project scenarios to use in the classroom, as well as in multiple environments such as face-to-face, online and other technology mediated learning. Such a comprehensive open learning networks approach that allows teachers to access their colleagues' course materials, share their own and collaborate is expected to enable all stakeholders to examine their own practices in the light of the best performing approaches. The Inspiring Science Education International Summer Academy is part of the ongoing effort to establish a European Science Education Academy which is supported by the European Physical Society.
Deadline for submission is 17 March 2014.
