The 7th joint annual meeting of the Austrian Physical
Society (ÖPG [1]) and the Swiss Physical Society (SPS [2]), held at the
Technology Campus of the University of Innsbruck / Austria from August
30th to September 3rd, 2021, will go down in the
annals of the ÖPG and SPS as a great success. Over 600 participants
attended on site an extremely successful program [3], thanks to the very
constructive interaction of all board members of the SPS and the ÖPG in
preparation and final design of the joint conference, both with regard
to the plenary session and the topical sessions, and also with regard to
the entire award ceremony for prizes awarded by ÖPG and SPS, the
ceremony including the binational Charpak-Ritz Prize, jointly awarded by
SPS and the French Physical Society SFP [4].
This year lectures
in the plenary session spanned a wide range of physical and
physics-related aspects [3], i.e. from surfaces at the atomic scale to
materials, from quantum states to quantum optics and quantum
technologies, from particle colliders to free electron lasers, from
exoplanets to black holes, from physics and education to physics and
society, in particular also in connection with innovative products by
start-ups, with renewable energy and its repercussion on the climate,
and with quality of life in connection with medical applications of
physics-related technology.
Stimulated by the talks given in the
plenary session and in the topical sessions, and by the personal
exchange during the poster sessions, where some are accessible online
[3], it was indeed possible to show what the advantages of a personal
exchange are, being again achievable with the Covid certificate being
checked at the registration desk, and where it became self-evident that
physicists are predominately fully vaccinated. When new contacts are
made, when informal conversations spontaneously arise and where one can
build up mutual trust, the glue is formed to do further and better
research, allowing trying out new ideas in physics, which are the base
for the proposition and realization of new projects. It is this
inspiring vibe that motivates young members to stay long-term members of
the two societies and thus allows to actively shape the future
activities of the two societies, which get then also constructively
reflected by the associated activities of the EPS.

Winners of the prizes of the Austrian and of the Swiss Physical Society,
and the winner of the binational Charpak-Ritz Prize of the Swiss and of
the French Physical Society, together with the presidents of the
French, Swiss and Austrian Physical Societies. The prizes have been
bestowed during the 7th joint annual meeting of the Austrian and Swiss Physical Society in Innsbruck/Austria from 30th August to 3rd September 2021.

The Equality Commission of the Faculty of Physics of the University
of Valencia and the Spanish Women in Physics Group (GEMF) of the Royal
Spanish Physics Society have organized the I National Virtual Meeting of Undergraduate Women in Physics
last 12 July 2021. The meeting was sponsored by the GEMF and the
Vice-Chancellor’s Office for Equality, Diversity and Sustainability in
its 2021 call for grants for the organization of conferences, workshops
and other events to promote equality between women and men and the
visibility of women in academia.
The program consisted of lectures
on physics by young pre-doctoral women researchers on different topics
in the morning and in the afternoon, talks, round tables and working
groups about gender and physics. The program is accessible in http://www.gemf-rsef.es/2021/07/01/i-encuentro-nacional-virtual-de-alumnas-de-fisica/ and the recorded videos are in https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTWVpSC0TqzxJfPOBsDYKgw
The
asymmetry in the distribution by gender in the studies of the areas of
science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Science, Technology,
Engineering, Mathematics, STEM) represents an extraordinarily serious
problem for several reasons. One of them is the demand of STEM jobs in a
near future and in addition those works will be well remunerated from
the point of view of salary. The lack of women in those jobs will lead
to an increase in the gender pay gap that, on average, today is above
16% and reaches 45% in the highest salaries. In the area of Physics and
STEM, a strong decline in female presence shows a low interest of girls
in these areas mainly in secondary education.
The acronym STEM is
being changed to PECS (Physics, Engineering, Computer Science), which
represent areas where women are dramatically underrepresented. For
example, the male-female ratio among US college majors in biology,
chemistry, and many other STEM fields is now 1 to 1, while in physics,
engineering, and computer science (PECS), the relationship seems have
stalled at roughly 4 to 1 as evidenced by the article published in the
journal Science https://doi.org/10.1126/science.aba7377.
In Spain, areas such as biology, chemistry and all degrees that involve
bio- are highly feminized, and even the male-female ratio is reversed
in many cases.
Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP)
Since
2012, the American Physical Society (APS) is organizing Conferences for
female students in the Degree in Physics in the USA. CUWiP was founded
with the goal of increasing the number of female physics graduates.
Through a weekend of plenary sessions, workshops, and networking events,
CUWiP seeks to provide university women with a supportive community and
the tools they need to be successful in physics. According to the
following article
https://www.aps.org/publications/apsnews/202001/cuwip.cfm there is a
direct correlation between attendance at these conferences and the
increase in the number of female students enrolled in the physics
degree.
With this motivation we organized this unprecedented event
in Spain. We wanted to generate a network of sisterhood around
interests in physics, making the role of women in physics visible, and
encouraging female and male students to share discussions with senior
women physicists. It is not just a place where they can receive training
in physics and gender, but students will be able to participate in some
activities by discussion groups that help them to create networks of
cooperation and collaboration to eliminate barriers and obstacles that
may find in their career path.

The Austrian and Swiss physical societies have a well-established
tradition in organising their annual conference every second year
jointly.
This will also be the case for the 2021 annual meeting,
when they will meet together at the University of Innsbruck, in the week
of 30 August - 3 September 2021.
An interesting and rich program
is thus guaranteed, with plenary talks in the morning and topical domain
sessions in the afternoon, with oral and poster contributions. Evening
lectures and a special session commemorating the 450th anniversary of
Johannes Kepler will round up the week.
The event is planned as an
in-person reunion where participants will be able to meet, exchange and
profit from each other, and there is good hope that this will be
possible again.
More information at the websites of the Austrian and Swiss societies.

On 28 October, EPS Young Minds hosted a webinar with Dr. Gregory Quarles,
a renowned physicist with 25 years of experience driving cutting-edge
laser, optics and photonics technology development. Currently Dr.
Quarles is CEO and a member of the Board Tucson-based Applied Energetics,
Inc., previously he served as the Chief Scientific Officer for the
Optical Society and worked, among other institutions, at the U.S. Naval
Research Laboratory. Having been employed in academia, at a government
research laboratory, at a not-for-profit society, and more recently in
industry, in his talk “Beyond the Scientific Method for Career Success”
Dr. Quarles brought a unique perspective to opportunities that present
themselves to young researchers as their career progresses. Gregory
shared practical, real-world advice detailing opportunities, challenges
and decisions that can enhance the growth of a student’s career and
described the benefits of leadership opportunities through volunteerism
in global societies.
On 11 November, the webinar by Dr. Marina Corradini
took place. As a Science Communication Officer at the
Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre and former member of the Naples
YM Section, she presented the seminar titled “Demolishing Barriers to Science”,
addressing the topics of gender inequality and underrepresentation of
women and minorities in Academia and STEM-related fields. More than 40
people attended the seminar, where Marina illustrated three key points
to significantly weaken the gender barrier in science: awareness of the
situation, actions to be undertaken and resources to use and share.
First, she presented the social issues and those internal to academia,
which were followed by a discussion on the different ways each of us can
take action in order to make the STEM environment a place without
gender discrimination. The talk was accompanied by resources, links to
groups addressing any mentioned issue and references to many
initiatives. Participants also shared other resources and interacted
intensively with the speaker, showing a great enthusiasm, and proposing a
good amount of questions. With such an attendance and participation,
the seminar has been a huge success thanks to the incredible work of
Marina.
Both webinars were streamed online on the Facebook page of EPS Young Minds Programme. You can always watch them here:

This year the conference was first time ever online
The EOS Annual international conference and industrial exhibition, EOSAM, was initially planned to take place under the warm sun of Porto, Portugal in 7-11 September 2020, organized together with the Portuguese Society for Optics and photonics, SPOF. However, due to the circumstances with the covid pandemic, we wanted to ensure the safety of our attendees and their families, and made the difficult decision to move the onsite event into online form, for the first time ever in the history of the EOSAM conference.
During the conference week, 7-11 September, EOS offered live and on-demand presentations free of charge for attendees, with a chance to register and view the presentations also after the conference week, free of charge.
The conference week included the School of Physics on Optical Metrology, four live plenary talks and over 120 invited and contributed presentations covering all topics of optics and photonics under the 12 topical meetings.
At the conference, we had the pleasure of hearing the plenary talks of four esteemed researchers, one of which, was Hatice Altug from the Institute of Bioengineering, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Switzerland. She presented her talk on New Frontiers in NanoPhotonics: Next-Generation BioSensors. This session was special, as Prof. Altug also received the esteemed Emmy Noether distinction for Women in Physics from the European Physical Society (EPS) after her talk. The EOS warmly congratulates Hatice for this honor and thanks the EPS for this collaboration. In fact, the EPS and the EOS are collaborating societies since many years, and this collaboration is highly valued at the EOS.
The year 2020 has certainly been challenging for all, but it was nice to see the community coming together online to present and view the latest research in the field. It was a great pleasure to provide a platform for the researchers to present their research, in times when conferences in person cannot be held.
We warmly invite all EPS members to join us for the next EOSAM conference to be held in person in Paris in 6 - 11 September 2021

The European Optical Society, EOS, is a non-profit society, and an umbrella organization for all national optical societies around Europe. Our members extend from Europe to all over the world.
The EOS mission is to bring together and encourage the cooperation of all with an interest in optics, optoelectronics and related scientific fields, to make practical use of research results, and to support the industrial exploitation of optics. To this end, the EOS e.g. organizes international conferences, scientific, technical and cultural meetings, training courses, exhibitions, and other events…
