The Inspiring Science Education International Summer Academy will take place in Attica, Greece, from 13 to 18 July 2014.
The aim of the Academy is to support the professional development of teachers and trainers by offering access to a unique collection of open digital educational resources (e.g. remote labs, virtual experimentations, augmentations, simulations). Participants will be trained to link these resources with innovative pedagogical practices, implementing resource based and project-based approaches, in order to design educational scenarios by repurposing existing eLearning tools. Teachers will also be trained to appropriately select and exploit freely available existing eLearning tools and resources in their educational scenarios that suit their own needs in terms of planning, implementing and sharing pedagogical ideas, managing their classroom and organizing the curriculum. This will further empower them to create effective project scenarios to use in the classroom, as well as in multiple environments such as face-to-face, online and other technology mediated learning. Such a comprehensive open learning networks approach that allows teachers to access their colleagues' course materials, share their own and collaborate is expected to enable all stakeholders to examine their own practices in the light of the best performing approaches. The Inspiring Science Education International Summer Academy is part of the ongoing effort to establish a European Science Education Academy which is supported by the European Physical Society.
Deadline for submission is 17 March 2014.

On the 14th of November 2013, we visited the ’Technische Sammlungen Dresden’, along with new and old members of the jDPG regional group in Dresden. After getting to know each other we all took part in a journey through the history of electricity. But it wasn’t as tedious as it sounds. Indeed, it was a fascinating trip, which was enriched by short visits and talks of famous scientists like Thomas Edison or Benjamin Franklin. This spectacle was completed by sparkling flashes, rumbling thunders and amusing experiments! Although this journey was very galvanizing it was not the end of our trip: The mathemticians among us were thrilled to visit the ’Erlebnisland Mathematik’. There, we looked at fascinating patterns of geometry, mysteries of symmetries and wiggling stones. Each feature was equally delightful. After this part of the tour, everybody was hungry, so to finish the day, we went to the top floor. During lunch and enjoying the panoramic view over Dresden we could get into contact with the new members and tried to motivate them to join our YMS. This day gave us loads of new experiences, and when looking back now, it was simply amazing! We are looking forward to the next great experience! report and image credit Alexander Schulz

The European Physical Society [EPS] has produced a nice do-it-yourself calendar in
3D. The EPS 2014 calendar is a polyhedron with 20 faces including triangles and
(almost) squares.
To obtain the best results, print the file using A3 paper (297 × 420 mm or 11.7
x 8.3 inches).
Download the net here.

From the 18 - 19 November 2013, the EPS Young Minds [YM] Section Konstanz visited three different institutes in Zurich, Switzerland, to give 11 students from Konstanz, Germany an inside view of the local research. At ETH, Prof. Frank Schweitzer, the chair of Systems Design, researchers are trying to get a deeper understanding of dynamics of very different organizations. Several short talks gave a wide view of the various topics dealt with inside this interdisciplinary group – ranging from the analysis of the crashing of the social network Friendster to the wisdom of crowds or the relationship between social herding and cooperation. A following, very lively open ended discussion, gave the opportunity to further explore the research as well as more general aspects of studying and living in Zurich. Together with the EPS YM Section Zurich, the students visited the labs of Prof. Ursula Keller, the head of the Institute of Quantum Electronics at ETH. Prof. Keller’s Group mainly works on the development and application of ultrafast laser sources. The labs current work includes investigating ultrafast processes using attosecond laser sources, new broadband thin-disk lasers and ultrafast lasers with GHz repetition rate based on semiconductor saturable absorbing mirrors [SESAMs]. These techniques presented the possibilities and challenges involved in modern ultrafast optics. The visit at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology [EMPA] in Duebendorf gave an inside view on applied sciences. After an overview presentation of the broad range of projects, several lab tours gave provided insight into the ongoing work on self-assembling nanostructures, high power ceramics and high performance solar cells.
